Esse Architects was engaged to provide concept design services for the upgrade of the lower-level foyer within M Block (Te Manawa) at the University of Waikato. The project formed part of a larger seismic strengthening programme, addressing the need to improve building safety and resilience while maintaining a cohesive and functional interior environment.

Design Response: Restored spatial flow through thoughtful planning and visual cohesion within existing structural constraints.

The introduction of a new reinforced concrete shear wall , required to meet updated seismic performance standards, presented a unique architectural challenge. The wall’s placement would disrupt the existing circulation path between the lift and main staircase, prompting the need for a carefully considered redesign.

Esse’s approach focused on restoring connection and clarity through design. Particular attention was given to wayfinding, natural light, and spatial coherence across the foyer areas. The proposed concept balances the structural requirements of seismic compliance with the user experience, ensuring that movement through the building remains intuitive, accessible, and visually harmonious.

The M Block upgrade exemplifies Esse Architects’ ability to work within complex, highly technical parameters while preserving the integrity and usability of existing spaces.
