University of Waikato Foyer Upgrade – Block AG Entrance
Enhancing Identity and Experience Through Architectural Detail
Esse Architects prepared the concept design for the University of Waikato foyer upgrade within Block AG, part of an ongoing series of projects aimed at revitalising key campus buildings. The concept explored how subtle but strategic architectural intervention could transform the entry experience, modernise the building’s appearance, and align it with the University’s broader design language.
Client: University of Waikato
Location: Hamilton, New Zealand
Project Type: Education / Building Upgrade
Completion: Concept Design, 2023
Scope: Concept design for University of Waikato foyer upgrade and façade enhancement
Design Approach: Integration of natural materials and light to improve identity and user experience
Key Focus Areas: Wayfinding, spatial clarity, sustainability, visual cohesion within campus architecture
The proposal introduced timber screening and façade treatments to soften the building’s form and create a more welcoming and contemporary presence within the campus landscape. Vertical fins, natural materials, and controlled transparency help mediate between the solid mass of the existing structure and the surrounding outdoor spaces.
Internally, the design considered wayfinding, natural light, and spatial clarity, improving both circulation and accessibility. The goal was to elevate the everyday experience of students and staff while expressing the University’s commitment to sustainability and design excellence.
Esse’s approach balances practicality with architectural expression — revitalising an existing building through interventions that are sensitive, efficient, and enduring. The result is a concept that enhances not only the function of the foyer but also the identity of the wider campus precinct.
