Te Kotahi Oranga Health and Wellness Centre
Innovative Healthcare Architecture in the Waikato
Esse Architects delivered the full scope of architectural services for Te Kotahi Oranga Health and Wellness Centre, a first-of-its-kind facility in the Waikato that unites healthcare delivery with hands-on education. Located on Te Pūkenga’s Rotokauri Campus, the project extends the existing Hub Building to create a seamless integration between new and existing structures.
Client: Te Pūkenga – New Zealand Institute of Skills and Technology
Location: Rotokauri Campus, Hamilton
Project Type: Healthcare and Education Facility
Completion: 2023
Scope: Full Architectural Services – Design, Documentation, and Delivery
Key Outcomes: Seamless integration with existing campus architecture; enhanced access to community healthcare; real-world learning environment for ākonga.
The design required meticulous attention to the existing architecture and interior flow, ensuring a natural connection between spaces while maintaining the integrity of the original building. The result is a cohesive, contemporary environment that supports both community wellbeing and student learning.
Te Kotahi Oranga is a truly collaborative achievement. Designed in partnership with local healthcare providers, it offers accessible community services including falls prevention, pre-diabetes care and management, and free health screening. For ākonga, it provides invaluable clinical experience through placement opportunities in nursing and occupational therapy programmes, bridging education and real-world practice.
This community-led model demonstrates how thoughtful architecture can enhance both social outcomes and sector capability. By creating a space that supports connection, care, and education, Esse Architects has helped shape a facility that benefits not only its users but the wider Waikato region. Te Kotahi Oranga stands as an example of how design, collaboration, and purpose can converge to build a healthier, more resilient community.
