Innovative Design Supporting Environmental Science

Esse Architects was commissioned to develop the concept design for the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) at the Northland Marine Research Centre in Bream Bay. The project envisioned a flagship office and research facility designed to accommodate NIWA staff and visiting scientists, creating a purpose-built environment that supports world-leading marine and environmental research.

Client: National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA)

Location: Bream Bay, Northland, New Zealand

Project Type: Institutional / Environmental Research Facility

Scope: Concept design and full architectural services for NIWA’s Northland Marine Research Centre

Design Approach: Environmentally responsive design reflecting NIWA’s focus on marine and atmospheric science

Key Focus Areas: Sustainability, coastal resilience, scientific collaboration, workplace innovation, connection to environment

Taihoro Nukurangi (NIWA’s mission), encompasses the study of the natural world from the depths of the ocean to the upper atmosphere. Esse’s concept reflects this holistic approach to science, expressing themes of connection, resilience, and sustainability through architectural form and materiality.

The proposed design balances innovation and functionality, combining open-plan research zones, collaborative workspaces, and visitor areas with strong environmental performance. Orientation, glazing, and shading elements were carefully considered to maximise natural light and coastal views while minimising energy demand. The architecture responds to its coastal setting with durable materials and a refined aesthetic that complements the surrounding marine landscape.

Esse Architects provided full architectural services for the project, from initial concept through to completion. The resulting design serves as both a working environment and a statement of NIWA’s ongoing commitment to the sustainable management of New Zealand’s aquatic and atmospheric resources.
